Completed Staff Work at Work

Staff Work refers to a systematic process for providing analytical and decision support to senior managers—freeing them to focus on their role as decision makers by giving staff members greater responsibility for collecting and analyzing data and then deriving a best-alternative for the decision maker to either act on or take other action, such as narrowing the scope of the decision. Staff Work—also called “Completed Staff Work”—originated in the 1940s and was adopted by the U.S. Army in the 1950s as a doctrine. Over time it has been refined and enhanced as technology has evolved and new insights have been acquired about problem solving and decision making.

This 2-day course incorporates state-of-the-art tools and insights that staff workers need in order to provide analytical and decision support for senior managers. It is predicated on contemporary research drawn from decision science, psychology, and neuroscience. The course is structured around an eight-stage process that begins with defining the problem for which an action-decision must be made, and finishes with follow-on actions that may be necessary to bring closure to the problem. Tools and techniques that pertain to each stage of the process are also introduced and then reinforced by hands-on skill practices.
